We could go on and on about the features, but let us first look at how this masterpiece came to be. It all began with Steve Jobs’ initiative in investigating touch-screens for Apple Inc. On February 25, 2007, the first ever advertisement titled “Hello” aired on ABC. But wait, do you think the road to this end was all rosy and straight? You could not be more wrong. Just about six or seven months before this famous piece went on sale, screaming matches were a routine in the passages of Apple’s offices. Almost after every night coding session, frazzled and tired engineers quitting their jobs and rejoining days later could relax and have a sound sleep – these were all regular everyday scenarios. As quoted in Wired Magazine: Issue 16.02 “A product manager slammed the door to her office so hard that the handle bent and locked her in; it took colleagues more than an hour and some well-placed whacks with an aluminum bat to free her.” As Paul Bryant, known as Bear Bryant, puts it, ‘There’s a lot of blood, sweat, and guts between dreams and success.’ The Ipod 16gb and Iphone 3GS was not made in a day and a lot of sweat, guts, frustration and failure went into it before it became what it is.
So the next time you hold an Ipod 16gb and Iphone 3GS in your hand, think of all the hard work that has gone into the making of this masterpiece. It is not only full of features, it a work of art combined with sophisticated engineering and technology.
If you are like me and watched the original American science fiction series, Star Trek, with Captain James T. Kirk leading the Starship Enterprise, then you would remember the flip cell phones being carried by the staff of the Starship Enterprise. That was something purely fictional and who would have thought that in less than thirty years’ time, the IPod 16gb and Iphone 3GS would make it a reality. We have come a long way and there is no stopping this technological revolution and advancement. So go online, browse all you want and buy this beautiful masterpiece at dirt cheap prices. It is like having it all and that too at a very low cost.

The average consumer in this economy has over $5000 in credit card debt. Financial planning seminars such as Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover are being taught at over 15,000 churches a year. It’s time to re-think our focus on consumerism in America and stop seeing debt as a tool to get us ahead in life and start seeing debt in another totally different light.
DEBT IS A TRAP
Consumerism has run rampant in the last few years of our economy. We are constantly bombarded with the concept that “We just can’t live without Product X”? or “We need Product “? to be successful, happy, and content. And because we do not want to say No to ourselves, we buy into that philosophy that simply must have what is currently being advertised. The answer to buying most of these things that we do not need and cannot afford is to go into debt for the item. This leads us to a cycle of buying what we cannot afford, feeling guilty about those purchases, and generally having less satisfaction with our materials goods than more satisfaction. We have fallen into the trap that is set for us. If we were to see a fox in a trap that was set by an unscrupulous farmer, we would rise up and scold the farmer for trapping that animal. But yet, our society sets the same trap for us as consumers by trying to seduce us into buying things we do not need. People have managed to live for centuries without becoming debtors and we can start back on that path again of living without a credit card and without going into debt.
RESPONSIBLE LIVING TAKES DISCIPLINE
As a child growing up on a farm, we grew most of our own produce. Mom would send us out to the garden to weed and water the vegetables and we would complain and whine as we spent time in the hot sun, weeding the corn and picking the beans. But when she made a delicious meal of corn on the cob, roast chicken, and green beans, complete with hot bread from the oven, our complaints turned to delight as we devoured that meal.
Financial responsibility today is like weeding the garden. It’s hot, it’s hard, it’s makes us break a sweat. We have to pinch pennies; say no to new products when used will do, rent movies at the library for free instead of buying them at the Red Box at McDonald’s. We need to move back to our roots and start depending on our neighbors instead of Master Card and Visa.
LIFE WITH LESS CAN BE LIFE WITH MORE
It’s certainly fun to have the newest gadget, the most fashionable clothing, the latest and fastest car on the block. But even without those gizmos that Madison Avenue peddles to us every year, we can be happy. We can cook more at home, open our homes up to neighbors and friends, and enjoy the simple things in life that truly satisfy instead of the falling into the trap of buying things to become a happier person. Play a game of cards with a neighbor instead of playing a game of “Keeping up with the Joneses”?. Your life will be happier, your pocketbook will be fatter, and you’ll be on your way to avoiding a life caught in the DEBT Trap.
