Like to use quotes in your copy? As with many elements of writing, there is a right way of quoting sources in your text. A good grammar fixing software should help you fix the presentation through most of it, although it’s usually better to know the rules as well, so that you may perform a manual proofread just to be sure. This can be done after you will finish your writings so that you will have a plenty of time to proofread and edit your writings without any ideas or words that are being wasted.

Quote placement. Naturally, you need to place quotes around the sourced text. Put one in front of the quoted portion and another one at the end. Do note the proper rules for punctuation placement next to quotation marks:

o inside the quote for periods and commas

o outside the quote for semicolons and colons

o inside the quote for exclamation and question marks if they’re part of the quoted sentence

o outside the quote for exclamation and question marks if they’re not a part of the quoted sentence

Capitalizing. The first word of the quote should be capitalized if it’s a complete sentence. It’s not necessary if you’re quoting a phrase or clause that’s contained within a sentence.

Interrupted Quotes. When you break up quotes mid-sentence, the first letter of the second half of the quote need not be capitalized. Both parts of the quoted material should be enclosed in quotation marks. This is very common as part of writing contents but there are many writers who don’t follow this rule and will interchange the rule in quoted sentences where they don’t capitalized the first letter. Just be aware of this thing as it may sometimes confuse you.

Errors. Does the quoted portion of the text have grammar errors? Leave them in and add a note to inform the reader you’re aware of the mistake. The standard notation is to add [sic] after the offending word or sentence.
