Moviegoers Kiss ‘The Princess And The Frog’ In The Saturday Box Office Report
1. “The Princess and the Frog” ($7 million)
2. “The Blind Side” ($4.7 million)
3. “Invictus” ($2.9 million)
4. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” ($2.4 million)
5. “A Christmas Carol” ($1.7 million)
Neither the global crush on Robert Pattinson nor the surprising success of Sandra Bullock could measure up to Disney’s epic return to hand-drawn animation in “The Princess and the Frog.” The Disney picture easily won first place at the box office on Friday with $7.5 million, combining with earlier sales for a cumulative domestic total of just under $10 million.
“The Princess and the Frog” has gained a significant amount of buzz thanks to being Disney’s first in-house hand-drawn animated film since 2004’s “Home on the Range,” a film that earned only $4 million on its opening day. Already, “The Princess and the Frog” has pushed itself past that number and could potentially see a weekend total close to $30 million.
Second place went to “The Blind Side,” Sandra Bullock’s continually successful football drama. The movie earned $4.7 million on Friday, placing “The Blind Side” ahead of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” for yet another night — except this time, “New Moon” fell behind by an additional ranking to fourth place. Are the days of “The Blind Side” and “New Moon” competing head-to-head finally over? Has Edward Cullen succumbed to the weight of the almighty Bullock? If so, does anybody even care, given the fact that “New Moon” has already achieved record-smashing numbers?
For now, the temporary victory goes to Warner Bros. over Summit Entertainment, as The WB secured both second and third place with the aforementioned “The Blind Side” and Clint Eastwood’s latest effort, “Invictus,” which earned $2.9 million by Friday evening’s conclusion.
“A Christmas Carol” yielded a fifth place finish worth $1.7 million, proving that Jim Carrey’s performance as Ebenezer Scrooge and the increasingly close Christmas date are a powerful enough combination to continually capture moviegoers’ attention.
